Interview with Dmitry Falkovich

by Diana Ringo
September 12, 2018

Dmitry Falkovich is an interesting man; he is a mathematician, graduate of Moscow State university who became a successful investor included in the Forbes Midas List Europe. Suddenly he displayed a completely different side of his personality. In 2018 his directorial debut Ivanov appeared at the film festival circuit and was received with great interest, winning important awards. Dmitry not only directed and produced the film himself, but also played the protagonist. Ivanov is a semi-biographical story about a businessman who flees Russia to uncharted Kiev. An air of alienation, corruption and uncertainty of destiny pervades the film, which is also full of satiric references to physics and philosophy. It does not feature professional actors, which adds authenticity to the picture. The film is characterized by minimalist, yet expressive cinematography, memorable characters and strong visual style. Ivanov has a brisk tempo, does not overstay its welcome and ends on an ambiguous note. The film received Best Feature Film and Best Cinematography awards at the Prague Independent Film Festival. Peter Gallagher met Dmitry in London and recorded this interview. Camera by Tara Gordon.
