The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the feature films eligible for consideration in the Non-English Language Film category for the 79th Golden Globe Awards®.

In December 2021 the entries for the Best Non-English Language Film category were named. Some of the well-known directors represented are Pedro Almodóvar, Paul Verhoeven, Paolo Sorrentino, François Ozon, Asghar Farhadi. Ninety-two films submitted from sixty-two countries are eligible for consideration in the Non-English Language Film category for the 79th Golden Globe Awards.

2021 Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or winner “Titane” and Grand Prix winners “Compartment No. 6” & “A Hero” are among the 92 foreign-language films that have qualified for the 79th Annual Golden Globe Awards.

“Titane” by Julia Ducournau (France, Belgium) is a bizarre art house body horror film about an androgynous woman who is a dancer, car model and a serial killer. Graphic nature of the film has caused some viewers to faint during various screenings.

“Compartment No. 6” by Juho Kuosmanen is a Finnish-Russian romantic road movie about a chance meeting of two lonely people. A Finnish female student traveling from Murmansk and a tough guy Russian miner end up sharing a compartment. Despite their initial differences, they end up developing intense feelings for each other. The lead roles are played by Seidi Haarla and Yura Borisov.

Auteur cinema is represented by the philosophical film “Quarantine”, another Finnish-Russian production, by the young director from Finland, Diana Ringo. Anatoly Bely plays the main role of a man who survived the apocalypse and lives in a bunker. The film is about the consequences of making a deal with conscience. “Quarantine” has experimental elements and a non-linear structure. It contains many memorable visual images, and the music, composed by the director herself, creates a unique and mysterious atmosphere.

“Benedetta” (France, Belgium, Netherlands) by veteran Dutch filmmaker Paul Verhoeven is a biographical drama film about Benedetta Carlini, a Catholic nun who experiences mystical visions and is judged and imprisoned for her lesbian affair with another nun. The film proved to be controversial in some Catholic circles.

The final nominations will be announced on Monday, December 13, 2021.
